Why Variable Pitch Propellers?

 

A ground adjusted propeller, even more so a fixed-pitch propeller, can only be a compromise. There is only one operating point where it will function at its full performance, usually during cruising. At takeoff, full engine speed will not be reached and the engine thus not its full performance. This is not the case with a variable pitch propeller. Have full performance at your disposal at any stage of your flight.

 

If you want to haul gliders or to take off from a very short runway you'll need full engine output. This can be released by a variable pitch propeller. For cruising you can return to your customary speed through a different setting.
